It seems City of Edinburgh Council have realised paving over a drain isn’t the smartest idea.

Extended pavement for pedestrians next to a busy road filled with buses. The extended pavement abruptly ends near the bottom of the image, having clearly been cut away to uncover a drain in the street, with bits of broken concrete blocks around it.
